Free mystery and crime films
The detective series were the bread and butter of the studio B unit: a recurring sleuth, a country house, seventy minutes, four of them a year. They were made to fill the bottom of a double bill and a good many of them are far better than that job required.
Alongside them are the straight crime pictures: heists, con men, courtroom dramas and prison films, most of them made fast and cheap by people who had made a dozen already that year and knew exactly where to put the camera.
