Kansas City Confidential (1952), Phil Karlson's masked armored car heist noir with John Payne. Watch the full movie free online, with no account needed.

Four men take an armored car in masks, and three of them have no idea who the others are or who hired them. John Payne is the ex-con delivery driver framed for it, and he goes after them with a patience that curdles into something meaner as he goes.

Phil Karlson stacked the gang with Lee Van Cleef, Jack Elam and Neville Brand, which is roughly the three most alarming faces available in 1952. The resort stretch was shot on Santa Catalina Island standing in for a Mexican fishing town.

The copyright was never renewed, so it went public domain in 1980. It gets named as the model for Reservoir Dogs often enough that the resemblance is worth judging yourself.

This film has an audio description track, written and recorded here, so a blind or low-vision viewer can follow it by ear. There is nothing to switch on — the description is in the film’s own sound, so pressing play is the whole of it.

This is our restoration, with the audio description track mixed in. There is nothing to switch on: press play and the description is in the sound. It is free, there is no account, and nothing is counted.

Sound only — 188 MB rather than 1.8 GB. Everything the described master says, without the picture.

Or watch it with the picture:

The same film without description, if you would rather have the original sound alone.

Every film here that carries audio description — what description is, who it is for, and how ours are made.

How this print was restored

This copy of Kansas City Confidential was restored here, from a print that had been through a good deal before it reached us. The work finished on 2026-09-12. Every step is listed below, because a re-encode passed off as a restoration is worth nothing and the only way to tell them apart is to say what was done.

  • 476 described cues across a 99 minute 15 second runtime, filling 38 minutes 33 seconds of gaps between dialogue -- 38.8 percent of the film -- at 168 words per minute.
  • That coverage sits inside the 36 to 46 percent band professional description aims for.
  • Figures measured from the shipped sidecar and the shipped master.
  • No picture restoration on this pass -- the video bitstream is the source, copied rather than re-encoded, so nothing here is a grade.
  • Described track flagged default and visual_impaired, with the original audio kept as a separate selectable stream.
  • No caption file yet: this title ships described but not captioned.

The print we started from is here, so the before and after can be compared.
