Free drama films
The dramas that survive on the margins are the ones the studios stopped thinking about: social problem pictures, melodramas, wartime features made to a deadline and a purpose. They are a much better record of what audiences were actually being told in a given year than the prestige films anybody remembers.
They also tend to be short, which was a production constraint and turns out to be a virtue. Seventy minutes with one idea in it beats two hours with the same idea and more weather.
