Carnival of Souls (1962), the drifting dream-logic horror that Herk Harvey shot in three weeks for $33,000. Watch the full movie free, no account needed.
A woman climbs out of a river after a car goes off a bridge, takes a job playing church organ, and starts sliding out of the world without anyone noticing. It runs on dream logic and gets under you sideways rather than head on.
Herk Harvey directed exactly one feature. His day job was industrial films for Centron in Lawrence, Kansas, and he spotted the abandoned Saltair pavilion on the Great Salt Lake driving home from a shoot. He rented it for fifty dollars. Three weeks, $33,000, an unknown cast, and Gene Moore's organ score doing half the work.
The copyright lapsed, it ran forever on late night television, and quietly became one of the most influential horror films ever made.
