Three music boxes are made by convicts in Dartmoor and sold off at auction, and the tune each one plays is a set of directions to a stolen set of Bank of England plates. Holmes gets there in the end, but Hilda Courtney got there first, and Patricia Morison plays her several steps ahead for most of the running time.
This was the fourteenth and final Rathbone and Nigel Bruce picture, and Rathbone had had enough of the part. Roy William Neill, who directed most of the Universal run and produced it too, died of a heart attack before the year was out, which closed the series from both ends at once.
It takes its shape from The Adventure of the Six Napoleons and never pretends otherwise.
