Free westerns

For thirty years the western was the most reliably produced thing in American cinema, and most of what was produced was not the famous stuff. It was the sixty-minute oater, made in a week on the same stretch of California ranch land every other studio was using, for an audience of children on a Saturday morning.

A great deal of it survives, and a fair amount of it is better than its reputation. The series westerns had recurring casts, standing sets and a formula, and inside that formula some very good filmmakers did some very economical work.
