Welles directs and plays Franz Kindler, an architect of the camps now teaching at a Connecticut boys' school under a new name, married to the judge's daughter and going to church. Edward G. Robinson is the war crimes investigator who talks his way into town, and Loretta Young is the wife who has to be shown what she married.
Welles took the job to prove he could finish on schedule and on budget. He did both, and it earned roughly three times what it cost, which makes it the one unambiguous commercial hit he ever directed.
It is also the first Hollywood feature to put real concentration camp footage on screen. A few seconds of it, dropped into the middle of a thriller, in 1946.
