For blind and low-vision viewers
Where can I watch audio described movies for free?
Here, for a start: Tape Territory has classic films with audio description we write and record ourselves, free, with no account and no ads. A few free, ad-supported services also describe some of what they carry.
Tape Territory
Every described film on this site is free to watch, with no account, no subscription and no ads. The description is written and recorded here, for films that never had it. Most come in three levels: Express for the essentials, Standard, and Extended, which pauses the picture so nothing has to be left out. Captions are on the films that have them.
Free services with advertising
The American Council of the Blind’s Audio Description Project lists Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel among the platforms that offer audio description. All three are free to watch with ads. Tubi keeps its described titles in an “Audio Description” category. On these services, description is available for some titles, not all of them.
PBS also describes much of its programming. In the ACB’s words, “while many programs are free to watch, some require a subscription”.
Find any title
The ACB keeps a Film and Series Title Directory of described titles across services. It is the quickest way to check whether a film you want has description, and where. Tape Territory is a listed provider there: see our titles in the directory.
For students
The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) lends described educational media free to families and school staff of a student with a disability. Its own FAQ says adults who are blind do not qualify for a membership for personal use.
Is audio description free?
On Tape Territory, yes: every described film is free, with no account and no ads. Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel are free with advertising, and the ACB lists all three as offering audio description on some titles.
