The finding, and the working behind it
Original registration LP409, (c) The Haig Corp., 27 Jun 1946 (1946 CCE volume catalogofcopyrig191libr). Renewal fell due 1973-74. There is no renewal of this film in the 1973 or 1974 volumes, and Haig Corp. does not appear. International Pictures renewed only two 1945 titles (It's a Pleasure, R543809; Tomorrow Is Forever, R543811). Neighbors renewed: L403 and L404 (Universal), L406 (Fox), L408, L410, L412 and L414. ... Music: Bronislau Kaper renewed only "On Green Dolphin Street" and a 1945 Chopin arrangement, 1973-74; nothing from The Stranger. Underlying work: an original screen story by Victor Trivas, never published, which lapsed with the film (Shoptalk v. Concorde, 2d Cir. 1999). Not searched: anything outside the United States.

This is a finding about United States copyright, made in good faith from the public record. Copyright terms differ by country, and a film in the public domain here may still be protected elsewhere.
A negative search proves that no record was found, which is not identical to proving that no record exists. The Copyright Office says as much about its own catalogs. Where a search could not be decisive we say so above rather than rounding it up to certainty.
Restoring a public domain film gives nobody any new rights over the film, including us: this print is free to take, use and pass on, exactly as the original is.
