They Made Me a Criminal (1939), John Garfield on the run, directed by Busby Berkeley with no dance numbers at all. Watch the full movie free, no account.
A world champion boxer is accused of a killing he did not commit, is written off as dead, and turns up on a farm in Arizona with a houseful of Dead End Kids. Claude Rains is the detective who never believed the death and works steadily toward him from the other end of the country.
Busby Berkeley directed it. The man who built those overhead kaleidoscope numbers at Warner Bros. took a crime picture with no music in it and shot the desert like it was pressing down on everyone, with James Wong Howe on the camera. It remakes The Life of Jimmy Dolan from 1933, and it is the better film.
The copyright was not renewed, which is how a Warner Bros. picture with Claude Rains in it ends up free.
