What is usually said
An AIP giant-man picture that appears in public domain box sets and on free streaming channels, usually alongside titles that genuinely are free.
The finding, and the working behind it
Not public domain: renewed as RE0000260918 on 15 October 1985, in copyright to the end of 2052.
Filed on time, in the twenty-eighth year. A search on the single word "colossal" in the renewal class returns six records, all read, and this is one of them.
The company names are the interesting part. The original claimant is Malibu Productions and the renewal was taken by Selma Enterprises, so the AIP-era library passed through hands the way most of them did — without the copyright lapsing on the way.
Sharing a box set with genuinely free films is the most common reason a title ends up mislabeled. The disc was assembled from cheap prints, not from a rights search.

A renewal registration on the public record is evidence that a copyright was claimed, not a judgment that the claim is good. Who holds it, and whether the chain of title behind it stands up, are separate questions we are not in a position to answer. What we can say is that the record is not empty, and every list describing this film as free is asserting that it is.

We do not publish this film and we do not link to a copy of it. It is on our blocked list by name rather than by upload, because the same title reappears under a dozen identifiers and blocking identifiers would be an endless game.
