It is on every public domain list on the internet. The copyright record says otherwise, and here is the number.

What is usually said
A Roger Corman picture that circulates freely and appears on the usual lists, often under the assumption that anything this cheap was never renewed.
The finding, and the working behind it
Not public domain: renewed as RE0000286138 on 12 February 1986, in copyright to the end of 2053.
Renewed on 12 February 1986 by Selma Enterprises, naming the original registration LP0000012027 and an original entry under Malibu Productions.
The catalog entry is the reason nobody finds it. The film is remembered as a Corman picture for American International; the record says Malibu Productions, and the renewal says Selma Enterprises. Neither name is on the poster, and a search for either of the ones that are returns nothing.
Second of the three Selma renewals, between I Was a Teenage Werewolf in October 1985 and The Brain Eaters in April 1986.

The one thing that can be said against this
As with the rest of this group, the renewal was filed by a party with no obvious connection to the original production. That is a question about ownership, not about existence: the registration is on the public record either way.

What this does and does not mean
This is a finding about United States copyright, made in good faith from the public record. Copyright terms differ by country, and a film in the public domain here may still be protected elsewhere.
A renewal registration on the public record is evidence that a copyright was claimed, not a judgment that the claim is good. Who holds it, and whether the chain of title behind it stands up, are separate questions we are not in a position to answer. What we can say is that the record is not empty, and every list describing this film as free is asserting that it is.
