Not public domain in the United States
What is usually said
An Ed Wood picture, and Ed Wood is shorthand for public domain. It is uploaded constantly and sold on compilation discs beside titles that genuinely are free.
The finding, and the working behind it
Not public domain: renewed as RE0000105166 on 31 July 1981 by Paramount, in copyright to the end of 2048.
The search returns exactly one record on "glenda" and it is this film, filed under its own title with no spelling trick at all. Paramount renewed it in July 1981, inside the twenty-eighth year, naming Screen Classics Productions as the original claimant.
The assumption doing the damage here is authorship rather than paperwork. Plan 9 is in copyright, Bride of the Monster is in copyright, and now Glen or Glenda is too — three Ed Wood titles, three renewals, and a reputation for being ownerless that none of them has earned.
Jail Bait, also Ed Wood, sits in this register on the other side with no renewal found. The director is not the unit of analysis. The film is.
