The Red House

The Red House (1947), Edward G. Robinson and a farmhouse in the woods that nobody is allowed near. Watch the full 1940s noir free, with no account needed.

A one-legged farmer has raised his adopted daughter carefully and asks one thing of her, which is to stay out of the Oxhead Woods. There is a house in there. Robinson plays him coming apart slowly across a picture that is closer to rural gothic than to city noir, with Judith Anderson as his sister and Rory Calhoun paid to keep people off the land.

Delmer Daves directed it for United Artists. The score is Miklos Rozsa, who brings in the theremin, the same trick he had pulled on Spellbound, and that thin electric whine hangs over the woods for the length of the film.

It is a horror movie with a plow in it, and it plays better than that sounds.
