Seven people in a Pennsylvania farmhouse, the dead walking outside, and the worst decisions all coming from inside the house. Romero shot it in and around Evans City for about $114,000, using Bosco chocolate syrup for blood and offal donated by an investor's butcher shop for everything the ghouls are eating.
The reason you can watch it for nothing is a clerical accident. The distributor changed the title from Night of the Flesh Eaters, and in remaking the title cards the copyright notice came off the print. Under the law at the time that settled it: no notice, no copyright. The most important American horror film of the sixties belongs to everybody because somebody forgot a symbol.
