Cooper's frontier novel, made by people who cared about landscape. Tourneur composed shots like a painter, and rather than fake wilderness on a lot the company went to Yosemite Valley and Big Bear Lake for it. Barbara Bedford plays Cora Munro, and Wallace Beery makes a genuinely frightening Magua.
Tourneur fell on set partway through and was out for months. His assistant Clarence Brown took over and directed a large part of the picture, earning the co-credit and starting himself toward the career that later had him shooting Garbo for most of a decade.
The attack on Fort William Henry is still one of the harder things in American silent film.
