Eisenstein was twenty-seven. Sailors on a Tsarist battleship are served meat crawling with maggots, the ship's doctor tells them to rinse it in brine, and what comes out of that is less a story than a machine assembled from cuts: faces, boots, a pram on a staircase, rhythm doing the work plot usually does.
The Odessa Steps massacre never happened. The staircase is real and the sequence was shot on it, but the killing is Eisenstein's invention, and it has been absorbed so completely that people remember it as history rather than as a scene.
Britain kept the film banned until 1954, one of the longest bans in its censorship history.
