Karloff is a dying Egyptologist who has himself sealed in a tomb holding a jewel he believes will buy him immortality, and then declines to stay put. Gaumont British spent real money on the sets and the shadows, and it shows. This is closer to a handsome country house mystery than to a Universal monster picture.
Ernest Thesiger is in it two years before The Bride of Frankenstein, and Ralph Richardson makes his screen debut as a shifty parson.
For decades it was simply a lost film. A murky subtitled print surfaced in Czechoslovakia in 1969, and a clean negative was later found in a disused Shepperton vault, which is where every good version comes from.
