A broke veteran returns a lost wallet, gets hired as a gangster's chauffeur, and discovers his employer has a second accelerator in the back seat so he can floor the car from behind the driver's head. Steve Cochran is the gangster, Peter Lorre is his man, and Robert Cummings is the driver who agrees to get the wife out of the country.
Philip Yordan adapted Cornell Woolrich's novel The Black Path of Fear, and Arthur Ripley directed it as though the plot were happening to him rather than being arranged by him. Much of it turns out to be a dream, which was the usual way of getting an ending past the Production Code and here produces something genuinely unmoored.
UCLA restored it in 2012.
