A family takes a wrong turn in West Texas and reaches a house kept by Torgo, who looks after the place while the Master is away. Everything about it is wrong, the pacing and the dubbing and the knees especially, and it is one of the strangest hours in American film.
Harold P. Warren sold fertilizer in El Paso and bet screenwriter Stirling Silliphant that anyone could make a horror film. He put up nineteen thousand dollars, cast local theater people and agency models, and shot on a hand wound Bell and Howell that ran 32 seconds at a time and recorded no sound.
In 2011 Ben Solovey bought a lot of old film and found the original workprint in it. He restored it, and it has never looked better.
