Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920): John Barrymore becomes Hyde on camera with no makeup and no cut. Watch the silent horror film free, no account needed.

Barrymore does the first transformation in front of the camera with nothing helping him. No dissolve, no cut, no appliance. He drops his shoulders, claws his hands, hauls his face into something else, and Hyde is simply there. Later scenes add the long fingers and the tapering skull, but that first one is all actor.

He was filming days at the Famous Players-Lasky studio in New York and playing Richard III on a Broadway stage at night, which may account for some of the intensity.

John S. Robertson directed. It is the version every later Jekyll is quietly arguing with, and it is the one that costs nothing.
