The City of the Dead (1960), released in America as Horror Hotel. Christopher Lee, New England witches, fog to the knees. Watch the full movie free online.
A student drives up to Whitewood, Massachusetts to research witchcraft for her professor and finds the town considerably more committed to the subject than she was. It is early Christopher Lee as the professor who sent her, and it is genuinely eerie in a way most 1960 horror is not.
None of it is in Massachusetts. The whole thing was shot at Shepperton Studios in England for around forty-five thousand pounds, with a New England town built on a soundstage, a British cast doing American accents throughout, and so much fog you can rarely see the floor.
Milton Subotsky wrote the story. He and Max Rosenberg went on to found Amicus, so this is more or less where that studio begins.
